Don’t Take It [Intra]Personal (0.2 CEUs)

Interpreters deal with so many demands while on the job. The intrapersonal demands - what goes on in our heads - can impact our work just as much as the environment, parties involved, and the language itself. This can be especially challenging to navigate as a new interpreter. In this virtual workshop we will use Demand-Control Schema and other tools to tackle negative thinking, stop playing the comparison game, and work toward being the best version of ourselves for our consumers and our colleagues.

This workshop will be about personal bias and how it impacts own work in the classroom. We will analyze how bias can harmfully and negatively impact how they interact with their D/HH students. Interpreters/DHH staff will discuss and unpack their bias, learn how to change their bias into experiences and change their perspectives. D/HH students often experience discrimination and oppression, due to bias from interpreters. Interpreters may develop bias unintentionally or intentionally; it does affect the D/HH students in many ways. This workshop will bring up scenarios and problems and have interpreters analyze the bias and how it impacts D/HH students.

Update - this workshop has been cancelled. We hope to reschedule for later in the year, please look for future information.

One of the tenets of the NAD-RID CPC is that interpreters maintain ethical business practices. Many interpreters, both new to the profession or those who have been working as staff or subcontractors, as well as students who are graduating from an Interpreter Training Program, have no formal education about how to manage their own business. This workshop will educate interpreters and students about best practices for conducting business as an independent contractor, or practitioner. In this workshop, we will discuss the credentials and qualifications necessary for being recognized as an interpreter, discuss billing practices, including deciding how to charge fair and reasonable rates, and discuss the pros and cons of self-employment.

Interpreting as Interaction: Interpreting Theory for the Real World (0.2)

Interpreting as Interaction: Interpreting Theory for the Real World introduces a different mindset for interpreters. Starting with real life interpreting examples, Cecilia Wadensjo, a Swedish-Russian interpreter, undertook groundbreaking research that began with actual interpreter performance and then found a theory that fit the real life data. Wadensjo’s resulting theory suggests that meaning does not exist in words at all but is an activity – something built together by people in interaction - and she analyzes interpreting from this perspective. In this workshop, Marlene Elliott takes this research as Wadensjo presents it in her book, Interpreting as Interaction and guides us through activities to bring this research to life and apply it to our everyday work as sign language interpreters. Many interpreters feel this approach frees them to embrace all of their experience and wisdom and creates a framework for greater fluency in their work. Practical application is the cornerstone of this workshop. If you usually find theoretical talk boring, tedious, or disconnected from the real world, this is the workshop for you!

Unleashing Your Implicit Bias while Understanding Your Privilege: Unlocking Your Intent to Discover Your Impact! (0.4 PPO)

Explicit and implicit bias exist in our society, and often as interpreters we are unaware of the impact it has on our work. Implicit bias, the attitudes or stereotypes that affect our understanding, actions, and decisions in an unconscious manner, can influence our perceptions and interactions without the interpreter being aware of it. Oftentimes than not our privilege influences our impact which conflicts with the intent. This workshop will explore bias. Participants will experience a privilege walk and be exposed to examples of biases that happen every day and discuss and explore ways to safely unpack and address biases.
